Mind the Child Campaign
A petition for traffic calming measures outside a Tynemouth school was started by Blackswan CEO Maurice Duffy and Chief Operating Officer Karen Lee.
After two years of petitioning, work has now started on a new zebra crossing outside Kings Priory Primary School on Percy Park Road, where their six-year-old son Ethan is a pupil.
More than 1,000 people signed a petition to create a zebra crossing at Percy Park Road after concerns were raised about the safety of children attending nearby Kings Priory First School.
Construction of the new crossing started last week and is expected to be completed within the next few weeks.
Karen said: “We are delighted that by working together we have got this crossing.
“It could mean the difference between life and death for these children, so it’s excellent to see work beginning on the creation of the zebra crossing.”
Maurice added: “That is a very busy road. It has a 20mph speed limit but people don’t comply with it.
“There is also a high level of parking in the area and a number of road junctions. There are children and elderly people using that road 24/7 and I myself try to cross it every day with my son.
“It’s very dangerous so it’s great news that a new crossing is being created.”
