Michael Miller MA (Oxon) JP
Blackswan Executive Coach
Michael attended Hirst High State School in rural Northumberland. After achieving a top award in “The Young Engineer for Britain” competition, he won a Sports Scholarship to Eton, before going Up to Oxford, where he graduated with a First Class degree in Jurisprudence from Balliol. He then practiced as a London based Corporate and Commercial lawyer with a leading international, US headquartered, law firm (the largest firm by geographical penetration in the world), where he embraced and worked with, as well as against, some of the best legal minds internationally, and achieved considerable expertise in multiple jurisdictions and contextual, as well as functional, approaches to legal issues.
He proceeded to enter mainstream senior management, and held Group Board level positions with the two largest chains of leisure clubs in the world, with HR responsibility for over 1,000 employees. He has served variously at Senior Board level as Group General Counsel, Group Head of HR and Group Company Secretary in corporations based in the UK as well as abroad, where he has operated extensively in the US, Spain, Germany, France, Greece and throughout Scandinavia.
He is extremely well versed in the regulatory structure surrounding European and US business and has been heavily and directly involved in investment activities / commercial contracting of all ranges up to £1Billion. He has unrivalled experience of due diligence, commercial contracting, private equity, corporate acquisitions and divestments, MBO’s/MBI’s, pre pack insolvency, corporate risk management and investment instruments. He additionally possesses specialist expertise in domestic and international franchising, having franchised and managed country operators in 12 jurisdictions simultaneously and established a Europe wide compliant system with great success.
Michael is an empathetic communicator, but, equally, a formidable operational strategist and negotiator, with experience of individual and collective challenges at all levels of a business, with access to a network of leading players within the international business, legal and investment arenas.
In his spare time, Michael, a former Newcastle United schoolboy, enjoys football and rugby (playing where historical war wounds permit, but more usually, coaching), reading and travel. A former president of the prestigious Younger Society, he is a long term and active member of the Oxford & Cambridge Club and the Northern Counties Club. These provide a unique network from which he can draw as and when desired, both nationally and internationally.
He is also involved in numerous charitable and not for profit ventures, including the "Cure Aniridia" and “Saville Theatre” Campaigns for children, the “Save Woodhorn Church” project and the “Target Schools” initiative, the latter aimed at ensuring that talented state school educated children are not under-represented in the Oxbridge application process.
